The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed strong concern over renewed xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians living in the Republic of South Africa, calling for urgent justice, safety, and accountability.

 

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria has summoned South Africas Acting High Commissioner in Abuja over reported cases of harassment, violence, and destruction of property belonging to Nigerian nationals.

The meeting, which is expected to address rising tensions, follows reports of protests and sporadic attacks against foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, with Nigerians among those affected.

 

The Federal Government described the development as unacceptable and warned that continued attacks could strain diplomatic relations between both countries.

 

Nigerian diplomatic missions in South Africa have also issued security advisories urging citizens to remain vigilant, avoid high-risk areas, and report any threats to relevant authorities.

 

While condemning the incidents, the government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of Nigerians abroad through sustained diplomatic engagement with South African authorities.

Officials further called for swift investigations, prosecution of perpetrators, and adequate protection for foreign residents.

 

Nigeria and South Africa have historically maintained strong economic and diplomatic ties, but recurring xenophobic violence has remained a sensitive issue between both nations.
