The Police Service Commission (PSC) has confirmed the dismissal of five police officers over their involvement in the killing of a young man in Effurun, Delta State.
The victim, identified as Mene Ogidi, 28, was allegedly shot by officers during an operation on April 26, 2026. The incident, which occurred in Effurun, sparked nationwide outrage after a video of the shooting circulated widely on social media.
According to the PSC, the officersamong them an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP)were found guilty of professional misconduct, abuse of office, and actions leading to unlawful killing. Their dismissal followed recommendations from the Nigeria Police Force and was ratified after due disciplinary procedures.
The Commission emphasized that no act of suspected criminality justifies extrajudicial killing, reiterating its commitment to holding officers accountable for violations of the law.
Earlier, the Inspector-General of Police had described the incident as unprofessional and criminal, ordering the immediate dismissal and prosecution of the officers involved. With the PSCs approval, the case has now been forwarded to the appropriate legal authorities for prosecution.
Authorities say the move underscores a renewed effort to enforce discipline within the police and restore public trust, amid ongoing concerns over police brutality in the country.
The case continues to draw attention as Nigerians await the outcome of the expected court proceedings.
